# Liability insurance (Haftpflicht)

Private Haftpflichtversicherung covers damage you cause to other people or their things. Most people in Germany have one, and it costs a few euros per month.

### What it covers

The classic cases: you break a friend's laptop, lose a landlord's key, or scratch a parked car with your bike. Without insurance you pay these yourself; liability insurance pays them for you.

### What to check before buying

Coverage sum (aim high - damage to people can be very expensive), whether lost keys are included, and the deductible. Read the tariff page, not just the price.

### Our editorial pick

Die Haftpflichtkasse, tariff [Einfach Besser](https://www.haftpflichtkasse.de/versicherungen/privatkunden/privathaftpflicht/Einfach-Besser/). Criteria: a specialist liability insurer, and the tariff covers personal, property and financial damage up to EUR 50 million per its own tariff page. The page lists no fixed premium - the price depends on your details, so get a quote there. (Source: haftpflichtkasse.de, checked on October 19, 2026.) This is an editorial preference, not a price ranking.
