Health insurance in Germany

Health insurance is mandatory: you must prove coverage when you enrol at university. This page describes the option types; it is not medical advice.

Statutory (public) insurance

Most students use statutory insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung). The legally required basic coverage - doctor visits, medicines, emergencies, hospital stays - is identical no matter which Krankenkasse you choose. As a dated example, TK lists its 2026 student contribution at EUR 141.16 per month up to age 23 and EUR 146.29 from age 23 without children, including care insurance, and notes the contribution barely differs between Krankenkassen. The student rate normally runs until the end of the semester in which you turn 30. (Sources: daad.de and tk.de, checked on October 19, 2026.)

Private insurance

Private plans can offer more benefits but are significantly more expensive and usually require paying bills yourself first and claiming reimbursement. Switching back to statutory insurance later is hard. (Source: daad.de, checked on October 19, 2026.)

Enrolment confirmation

Your Krankenkasse reports your insurance status to the university electronically; enrolment is not complete without it. With enrolment you are also automatically covered by the university's accident insurance for on-campus and course-related activities. (Source: daad.de, checked on October 19, 2026.)

Dental + vision cover (optional)

Optional, but if you wear glasses, look at the cover. BarmeniaGothaer offers supplementary dental insurance and eye cover (Mehr Sehen). Check the current premium, benefit limits, conditions and reimbursement interval before buying.

Our editorial pick

Statutory insurance as a student, from any Krankenkasse you like. Criteria: the basic coverage is legally identical everywhere, the discounted student rate is the standard compliant option (the TK figures above are a dated example, not a recommendation), and every Krankenkasse can report your status to the university. This is an editorial preference, not medical or financial advice.
